Frequently asked questions about leaving a gift in a Will

Can I change my Will later?

Yes. You can review your Will and make changes as your circumstances change. GOV.UK recommends reviewing your Will every five years and following major life changes. Changes must be made formally, either through a codicil or a new Will.

Do I need a solicitor?

You can make a Will yourself, but professional advice can help make sure your wishes are properly recorded, particularly if your circumstances are complicated.

GOV.UK recommends getting professional advice where a Will is not straightforward, for example where there are overseas assets, business interests or complex family circumstances.

We cannot provide legal or financial advice, but our Legacy Team can answer questions about leaving a gift to Leeds Children’s Charity.

What if my circumstances change?

Your Will should reflect your current wishes. You can review and update it when your circumstances change.

This could include getting married, separating, having children, moving home or other significant changes in your life.

How much should I leave?

There is no set amount that you need to leave.

Many supporters choose to provide for family and loved ones first and then leave a share of what remains to charity. Others choose to leave a fixed amount or a specific asset.

The right choice depends on your circumstances and wishes. A solicitor or professional Will adviser can help you decide.

Is there Inheritance Tax relief on gifts to charity?

In general, gifts left to qualifying charities in a Will are exempt from Inheritance Tax.

If you leave at least 10% of your net estate to charity, the rate of Inheritance Tax on the relevant estate can be reduced to 36%, subject to the applicable rules.

Inheritance Tax rules can be complex and may change, so you should speak to a qualified professional for advice about your circumstances.

Do I have to tell Leeds Children’s Charity?

No. You don’t have to tell us that you have included a gift to us in your Will.

If you do choose to tell us, we’d be delighted to thank you and keep you connected with the charity. You can also let us know if you’d prefer your gift to support a particular area of our work.

Can I leave a gift to Leeds Children’s Charity while still providing for my family?

Yes. Many people choose a residuary gift, which allows them to provide for family and loved ones first before leaving a share of what remains to charity.

Your solicitor or professional adviser can help you structure your Will according to your wishes.

Can I change my mind?

Yes. Your Will remains your legal document and you can review or change it in accordance with the relevant legal requirements.

We will always respect your decisions and treat conversations about legacy giving confidentially.
